This simple guideline document will help
you enable a very useful but much overlooked feature in the standard issue Lenovo
ThinkPad X1 Carbon laptops.
Quite a few other devices on the market
such as the Microsoft
Surface Pro have this (or a similar) feature. This is however, a set of specific
guidelines for activating this feature on Lenovo Notebooks. I chose this
particular PC as it is a very popular choice of enterprise hardware for a lot
of tech companies.
As a good number of us are on-the-go most
of the time, we barely find the time to charge our precious smartphones and
tablets – devices that have the details of our key contacts and clients who we
need to reach ‘when’ we need to reach them… regardless of the ubiquitous
limitation imposed on us all by our very fast-dying batteries of our smart
devices!. Very few of the tech-savvy amongst us are privy to the tips below
which will effectively help you turn your standard issue notebook into a portable
charger for your devices.
Well, that's why I put this together, it's
as simple as following a few very straightforward steps.

- On the homescreen of your Lenovo ThinkPad, click on the battery icon
(lower-right of your screen) to access the battery settings
-
Click on ‘More Power Options’
to access more detailed battery and power settings
-
Navigate to ‘Power Manager’ in
the menu bar to the right and select.
-
This opens up a separate ‘Power
Manager’ application. Note that this may take a few seconds to activate. Please
be patient while this loads
-
The Power Manager launches on
the ‘Power Plan’ tab by default. Navigate to the ‘Global Power Settings’ tab…
-
…select ‘Enable USB charge from
computer battery even when computer is off’
(The ‘Enable Always on
USB’ setting has to be active before you can select this option)
-
Click ‘Apply’ then ‘Okay’ to
save the new settings and that's it!
You’re all set
and good to go!
Your Lenovo ThinkPad notebook should be
able to charge your mobile devices now even when it's switched off. It's as
simple as just plugging into the USB port!
